Even before paramedics arrive, it is often family members, coworkers, or bystanders who have the opportunity to provide assistance. That is why taking first aid training<\/strong> can make all the difference. In addition to learning the proper techniques, training helps build confidence and allows people to respond quickly when every minute counts.<\/p>\n

Here are five situations where this knowledge can have a real impact.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. When Someone Goes Into Cardiac Arrest<\/h2>\n

Cardiac arrest is one of the most critical situations a person may face. When someone suddenly collapses and is no longer breathing normally, the first few minutes are crucial.<\/p>\n

In Canada, approximately 60,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals every year, or about one every nine minutes. Only one in ten people survives. The good news is that performing CPR combined with the use of an AED can double a person\u2019s chances of survival.<\/p>\n

First aid training teaches CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation)<\/strong> techniques as well as how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). Hands-on training also helps participants better understand which actions to take depending on the victim\u2019s age and develop the right reflexes to respond in an emergency.<\/p>\n

2. When a Child Is Choking<\/h2>\n

A bite of food swallowed too quickly, a small object placed in the mouth, or an unsuitable toy can cause choking within seconds.<\/p>\n

The risk is far from insignificant among young children. In Canada, between 2018 and 2023, choking accounted for 24.5% of deaths caused by unintentional injuries among infants under one year of age and 13.4% among children aged 1 to 4.<\/p>\n

For a parent, teacher, or childcare educator, these situations can be particularly stressful. When you do not know what to do, panic can quickly take over.<\/p>\n

First aid training teaches participants how to recognize the signs of an airway obstruction and perform the appropriate manoeuvres based on the victim\u2019s age.
